Three-time MVP Nikola Jokic’s future with the Denver Nuggets is currently under scrutiny as he has chosen not to sign a veteran extension with the team, as reported by The Denver Post’s Bennett Durando. Instead, Jokic plans to discuss extension options next summer, raising questions about his long-term commitment to the franchise he has been with since entering the NBA.
However, an anonymous front office executive from Denver expressed confidence in retaining the 2023 Finals MVP, stating, “No worry at all. It’s the smart move from his side,” acknowledging that opting for more time before committing could indeed benefit Jokic financially.
Jokic, a 6-foot-11 center, is entering the third season of his five-year, $276.1 million designated veteran contract extension, which includes a staggering $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season. After a standout individual season in 2024-25, where he averaged a historic triple-double over an entire season—29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists—the Nuggets encountered difficulties in the playoffs, falling in the second round against the eventual champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In response to the playoff exit, the Nuggets made significant roster adjustments this summer, trading Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets for Cam Johnson, a move aimed at enhancing their team’s depth. They also added center Jonas Valanciunas and free agents Bruce Brown and Tim Hardaway Jr. Additionally, second-year forward DaRon Holmes II, who missed his rookie season due to injury, is expected to make his debut, further bolstering the squad.
The Nuggets’ front office acknowledged the need for greater depth, emphasizing their commitment to improve after recognizing their struggles during the last season. The integration of new players is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing team performance, alleviating pressure on younger talents, and preparing for the upcoming challenges.
Despite the uncertainties surrounding Jokic’s future, the changes within the organization signal a proactive approach aimed at strengthening the team. This adaptability may foster a more competitive environment that can benefit not only the Nuggets but also excite fans as they look forward to the next season.
