The LSU women’s basketball team, currently ranked No. 6, is facing a critical juncture as they strive for a top seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament set to take place from March 18 to April 5. Despite appearing to be on the outside looking in for one of the coveted No. 1 seeds, there remains a glimmer of hope, as noted by LSU women’s basketball beat writer Reed Darcey during a recent appearance on Tiger Rag Radio.

The Tigers, boasting a record of 24-4 and 10-4 in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), are preparing to host Tennessee, with the matchup scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, broadcast nationally on ESPN. This game is pivotal; a victory would secure LSU a double bye in the SEC Tournament from March 4-8 in Greenville, South Carolina. Following that, should LSU defeat Mississippi State for what would be their fourth straight win and aim for a clean sweep in the SEC Tournament, their chances for a top seed could significantly improve.

Darcey emphasized that while the path is challenging, it is not entirely out of reach. “There’s still a small chance that LSU can get a No. 1 seed,” he shared, noting that winning the SEC Tournament would lead to a formidable seven-game winning streak. Although a loss in the SEC Tournament finals might still keep them in the No. 1 seed conversation, the team’s performance throughout the season, including losses to top-ranked teams such as No. 3 South Carolina, No. 4 Texas, and No. 5 Vanderbilt, suggests they have the mettle to compete with elite programs.

It’s worth noting that if LSU does not achieve a top seed, it shouldn’t be seen as a major setback; the Tigers captured the national championship last season as a No. 3 seed. The upcoming selection process for the NCAA Tournament will demand difficult choices from the Selection Committee regarding how to organize the bracket, potentially pitting LSU against formidable opponents such as Texas or South Carolina as they aim for a place in the Final Four, a path the Tigers are well-prepared to navigate.

Under the leadership of coach Kim Mulkey, a four-time national champion, the Tigers have shown significant improvement as the season progresses, showcasing their ability to adapt their game strategy effectively. As the tournament approaches, fans and analysts alike are optimistic about the potential for the Tigers to make a deep run, enhancing their position in the postseason landscape.
