Charles M. Blow reflects on the evolving perception of Juneteenth and the larger issue of erasure of Black history in America. During a recent visit to Emancipation Park in Houston, established by formerly enslaved individuals in 1872, Blow noted a troubling trend: corporate sponsors are increasingly hesitant to support activities related to Juneteenth and discussions of Black culture and heritage.

This hesitation contrasts sharply with the events of just a few years ago. In 2020, following the national protests sparked by George Floyd’s death, a bill to establish Juneteenth as a national holiday gained unanimous support. Even former President Donald Trump had endorsed the idea during his Platinum Plan for Black America ahead of the 2020 elections.

However, the political climate has shifted dramatically. The renewed focus on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion appears to be waning, with efforts to erase Black history and symbolisms gaining momentum, a phenomenon that Blow refers to as “The Great Blackout.” Notable examples include attempts to alter or remove significant representations of Black heritage, such as the image of Harriet Tubman being removed and then restored by the National Park Service, and the controversial dismantling of the Black Lives Matter Plaza mural in Washington, D.C.

This climate of fear has undeniably influenced how Juneteenth will be recognized this year, as many cities have opted to cancel their celebrations amidst the ongoing cultural battles over race and history. Blow’s commentary emphasizes the continued struggle for recognition and remembrance of Black history in the face of growing antagonism.

The current state of affairs reminds us of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and the collective memory of historical injustices. Encouragingly, conversations around these topics are ongoing, highlighting a community resilience and commitment to uphold the significance of such observances amidst adversity.
