The Fijian Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM) has raised alarms over the increasing commercialization of International Women’s Day, citing concerns that the fundamental purpose of the day is being obscured by corporate marketing strategies and promotional messaging. During a recent event to honor the occasion, Executive Director Nalini Singh highlighted that International Women’s Day originated from activism aimed at achieving women’s rights, such as equitable pay, suffrage, and safe working conditions.

Singh emphasized that the observance has increasingly been diluted to corporate slogans and social media campaigns, detracting from critical issues that women continue to face. She pointed out that many of the popular slogans circulating today are motivated more by corporate interests than by the true spirit of the women’s movement.

The FWRM advocates for the core message of International Women’s Day to focus on promoting gender equality, confronting systemic obstacles, and demanding accountability from governments and institutions. They are calling on the community to reconnect with the day’s authentic meaning and to engage in substantial actions that bolster women’s rights and social justice.
