Is “Dexter: Original Sin” Just a Trip Down Memory Lane?

The future of the “Dexter” franchise seems uncertain following the conclusion of the sequel series “New Blood,” where the character, portrayed by Michael C. Hall, appeared to meet a fatal end after 15 years in the role. While there is a new spin-off called “Dexter: Original Sin,” which stars a young Dexter, it seems to largely rely on nostalgia rather than innovate or expand the story.

Set in 1991, “Original Sin” presents a fresh take on Dexter’s early days as a police intern. Created by Clyde Phillips, who helmed the original series, the show attempts to retroactively change the narrative by suggesting that Dexter survived the events of “New Blood,” framing the new series as his memories while he is on the operating table. However, many fans might find themselves more familiar with the character’s journey, given that the original series was rich with flashbacks.

The new series seems to lean heavily into familiarity, showcasing characters like Batista and Masuka in traditional roles similar to what fans already know. While “Original Sin” attempts to introduce new elements, such as Dexter’s first kill tied to family dynamics, much of it feels repetitive with a nostalgic soundtrack that underscores its reliance on the past.

Though “Dexter: Original Sin” introduces new characters, including well-known actors like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey, the overall impression is that it doesn’t extensively develop the storyline, but rather revisits old themes. The program may be seen as a way to squeeze more interest from an established IP, leading some to feel that it lacks originality.

Despite these critiques, there is potential for “Dexter: Original Sin” to resonate with viewers who have a strong attachment to the original series. It offers an opportunity to revisit the “Dexter” universe, which could provide new insights that fans find appealing.

The first episode of “Dexter: Original Sin” launched on Paramount+ and is set to premiere on Showtime, indicating that the franchise, although facing challenges, is still trying to engage and entertain its audience. With each new episode, there’s always a chance for fresh developments that could change the perception of the series and honor its legacy.
