Jude McAtamney is set to take the field for the New York Giants in their upcoming NFL matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers at MetLife Stadium. This opportunity arises as he steps in for the injured veteran kicker Graham Gano, recently moving up from the practice squad to fulfill this role.
McAtamney’s journey with the Giants began when he was initially waived from the 53-man active roster at the start of the current season. However, his talent was clearly displayed during the pre-season, where he successfully executed all kicking responsibilities in victories over the New York Jets and New England Patriots. Notably, he made ten extra points and one field goal, also contributing during the pre-season opener against the Buffalo Bills.
This isn’t the first time McAtamney has been called upon in Gano’s absence. Last season, he was summoned from the practice squad for a regular-season game against the Washington Commanders, where he contributed two points in a closely contested game before an audience of 80,000 spectators.
Hailing from Swatragh, McAtamney has the distinction of being the first Irish-born placekicker to participate in a regular NFL game since 1985. His background includes playing college football with the Chowan Hawks and Rutgers Scarlet Knights, which provided a strong foundation for his professional career.
As McAtamney takes on this significant role for the Giants, his journey from Gaelic football in Derry to the NFL showcases his dedication and adaptability. This game presents another opportunity for him to demonstrate his skills on a prominent stage, further cementing his position within the league.
