The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) is set to vote on a proposal to request the suspension of Israel from European soccer competitions. This motion, seen in an agenda by Reuters, was put forward by several member clubs and highlights two significant violations of UEFA statutes by the Israel Football Association (IFA). One violation involves organizing clubs in occupied Palestinian territories without the endorsement of the Palestinian Football Association, and the other pertains to a lack of effective anti-racism measures within the IFA.
Support for the resolution is strong, particularly from Bohemian FC, one of Ireland’s prominent clubs. Daniel Lambert, the club’s chief operating officer, emphasized the gravity of these breaches and expressed optimism about the resolution’s chances following discussions with other clubs. He stated, “These are very serious breaches, important rules that are being ignored.”
The FAI confirmed that the vote will indeed occur, but UEFA has refrained from commenting on the matter, and the IFA could not be reached for a response. This initiative comes in the wake of recent calls from international bodies, including a U.N. Commission of Inquiry, which reported allegations of genocide against Israel due to its military actions in Gaza and called for Israel’s suspension from international football.
Previously, UEFA contemplated a vote regarding Israel’s suspension following its military operations in Gaza, but that was sidelined when a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect on October 10. The ongoing violence, which has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties in Gaza, alongside Ireland’s government, which has been outspoken against Israel’s actions, adds context to the urgency and significance of this resolution.
