Ireland has joined a coalition of countries, including Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia, in deciding to boycott the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest. This move comes in response to Israel’s participation in the event, following its recent conflict with Hamas, which has led to significant civilian casualties and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ, stated that taking part in the contest would be “unconscionable” given the ongoing situation.
The boycott was catalyzed by discussions at a European Broadcasting Union (EBU) meeting in Geneva, where the Spanish broadcaster RTVE pushed for a secret ballot regarding Israel’s involvement. The EBU’s refusal of this request has heightened distrust among several participating countries toward the festival’s organization. Approximately 50 broadcasters attended the meeting, which aimed to address recent allegations of unfair voting practices favoring Israel’s contestant, Yuval Raphael, a survivor of the October 7 attacks.
Martin Green, director of Eurovision, expressed satisfaction that members engaged in open dialogue about Israel’s participation prior to the vote. He emphasized that Eurovision should not be used as a political platform and must strive to maintain neutrality.
Meanwhile, Israeli President Isaac Herzog welcomed the decision for Israel’s continued participation, viewing it as a show of solidarity and a stance against those who attempt to silence the nation. He underscored the importance of showcasing culture and fostering international friendship through the contest.
Golan Yochpaz, CEO of Israel’s KAN broadcaster, cautioned against views that frame the exclusion as anything other than a cultural boycott, suggesting that such actions pose risks beyond the immediate controversy, potentially affecting other nations and artists in the future.
