BASRA — Iraq’s national football team head coach, Graham Arnold, expressed confidence in his players’ readiness to tackle the United Arab Emirates in the Asian playoff for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Arnold praised the team’s progress and emphasized the importance of support from fans and the media.
“The players have reached a commendable level, and many might not fully appreciate how far we’ve come, especially being in Iraq where we’re in the playoffs for the first time,” Arnold stated. He underscored that the journey does not end here, as the team aims to secure a spot in the World Cup. He highlighted the anticipation of a challenging match against UAE, mentioning their understanding of complex situations after their experiences in Saudi Arabia.
Arnold noted that the squad is in excellent physical and mental condition, stating, “Our focus is on alleviating pressure. The players are mentally prepared, and I take pride in what they have achieved during my time as head coach.” With an impressive record of four wins, one draw, and one loss out of six matches, he acknowledged the players’ defensive discipline and technical growth.
Midfielder Amir Al-Ammari echoed Arnold’s sentiments, emphasizing team unity and focus. Reflecting on their experience in Saudi Arabia, he expressed hope for strong support from Iraqi fans. “I don’t favor the term pressure; the players are mentally prepared. We consider ourselves as one family, unfazed by negative media,” Al-Ammari commented. He conveyed the determination among the squad, stating that all 24 players are prepared and eager to clinch the three points against UAE.
The Asian Football Confederation has scheduled the playoff matches for Iraq against UAE on November 13 and 18, with the first leg taking place at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi and the return leg at Basra International Stadium.
Earlier this month, Arnold conveyed to the Iraqi News Agency that securing qualification to the World Cup is of utmost importance. He described the upcoming playoff as a “historic opportunity” that must be seized with determination. Arnold urged fans to continue believing in the team as they work towards their goal.
Iraq earned its spot in the playoff round following a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia on October 14, which unfortunately ruled out their chances for direct qualification. Following the match, Iraq Football Association President Adnan Darjal reassured fans that they still have a chance, urging a fierce fight for success.
With a positive outlook and a united front, Iraq’s national team is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting and critical playoff campaign.
