Iran’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alireza Enayati, has disclosed that Tehran has consulted extensively with Gulf Cooperation Council states, particularly Saudi Arabia, regarding its ongoing nuclear discussions with the United States. Enayati expressed gratitude for Riyadh’s supportive stance towards dialogue and previous agreements made in earlier rounds of negotiations.
In a detailed interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Enayati mentioned that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently engaged in discussions with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman about the latest developments in the region. Both sides underscored the importance of fostering peace and security and avoiding conflict.
Furthermore, Iran’s foreign minister has maintained communication with his Saudi counterpart to keep him updated on the progress concerning the nuclear discussions. The third round of talks between Iran and the US concluded in Geneva, reportedly achieving “notable progress,” according to Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi, who is mediating these negotiations.
During the talks, US representatives and Iranian officials engaged in both direct and indirect discussions, indicating a commitment to resolving outstanding issues. Enayati highlighted that Iran entered the talks with a serious approach, prioritizing dialogue and underlining Iran’s right to enrich uranium, its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, and the need for sanctions to be lifted.
The marathon Geneva discussions lasted approximately seven hours, where participants actively engaged in substantive negotiations regarding both nuclear issues and sanctions. Enayati noted that progress was made, with some understanding reached on various points.
Moreover, consultations among regional countries aimed at maintaining security and preventing conflict are ongoing, with Iran valuing Saudi Arabia’s support for continued dialogue. A senior Iranian official indicated that an agreement could be achievable if the US distinguishes between nuclear and non-nuclear issues.
Nevertheless, concerns remain about possible military escalation if diplomatic efforts falter. While uncertainty looms over the potential actions of the US, should negotiations collapse, the focus appears to be on achieving a diplomatic resolution that ensures stability in the region.
