Iran has claimed responsibility for an attack on a U.S. air base located in the United Arab Emirates, specifically targeting the Al Dhafra air base south of Abu Dhabi. This incident occurred on Saturday, shortly after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran would cease its hostilities towards neighboring nations. The assertion came via an announcement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ navy drone unit, according to the Iranian state news agency Tasnim.

In response to the attack, the UAE’s Ministry of Defence reported that they detected 121 unmanned aerial vehicles on the same day, managing to intercept 119 of them. However, two of these drones managed to land within UAE territory. At present, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not publicly confirmed the attack following a request for comment from CNBC.

Pezeshkian’s comments included an apology to Gulf neighbors, insisting that Iran does not intend to invade other countries. He urged regional players to move beyond their disagreements and expressed a desire for Iran to navigate its current challenges with dignity. “Today, let us defend our own soil,” he remarked while addressing the nation through the Telegram channel of Iran’s national news agency.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted Pezeshkian’s statements, interpreting them as a sign of Iran’s vulnerability. In a post on his Truth Social account, he proclaimed that Iran had “apologized and surrendered” to its neighbors, adding that they would face severe consequences.

The atmosphere remains tense, as both U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against Iran are reportedly ongoing. This military campaign, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, aims to dismantle Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities and has seen U.S. forces target over 3,000 locations in its initial week, according to U.S. Central Command.

While the conflict escalates, the underlying hope for diplomatic resolution remains present, with calls for unity among Gulf nations as they navigate this crisis together. It is yet to be seen whether Pezeshkian’s remarks signal a genuine shift in Iran’s approach to foreign relations or whether the region will continue down a path of confrontation.
