Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht delivered a thrilling finish with a 1-yard touchdown run, propelling the Cyclones to a 42-41 victory over No. 15 Miami in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday in Orlando, Florida. With less than a minute left in the game, Becht’s fourth-and-goal score capped off an impressive season for Iowa State, which concluded with an 11-2 record—its best in program history.
Becht showcased his talents throughout the game, accumulating 270 passing yards and throwing three touchdown passes. Coach Matt Campbell noted that the team’s tenacity this season has been a hallmark of their character. This victory marks Iowa State’s fourth comeback win of the year where they scored the deciding points with under two minutes on the clock.
Despite Miami’s strong start, where quarterback Cam Ward made a notable impact in the first half, the Cyclones managed to rally from a 10-point deficit in the second half. Miami also had impressive performances from running back Damien Martinez, who rushed for 179 yards, and Ward, who passed for three touchdowns in his final college game.
The first half was a rollercoaster, featuring a rapid exchange of touchdowns and a combined 59 points before halftime. Both teams displayed explosive offenses, with Miami ending the half leading 31-28.
The game culminated with an essential 15-play, 84-yard drive by Iowa State, leading to the winning points. “It was great to see that confetti fall,” said Carson Hansen, reflecting the joy and celebration of the hard-fought win.
While Miami experienced disappointment, having dropped its sixth consecutive bowl game, Coach Mario Cristobal emphasized the positives for the team moving forward. The defeat doesn’t overshadow the potential and quality of play exhibited throughout the season.
As Iowa State wraps up its historic season, it will kick off the 2025 season on August 23 against Kansas State in Dublin, Ireland. Meanwhile, Miami is set to host Notre Dame, with their season opener scheduled for Labor Day weekend.
This remarkable conclusion to Iowa State’s season exemplifies their growth, resilience, and potential for the future, setting a high bar as they prepare for the next challenges ahead.
