Iowa State football is facing a significant overhaul heading into the 2026 season, as the team will not have any returning starters or key offensive players. The latest blow to the Cyclones came on December 31, when running back Abu Sama announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. This move leaves the program without its last prominent offensive player, as Sama has one year of eligibility remaining.

In the 2025 season, Sama having a standout year, recorded a career-high 732 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 140 attempts. Over his three seasons with Iowa State, the Des Moines native compiled 1,933 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. His notable performance this year included a season-high 177 yards and two touchdowns against Colorado on October 11.

With the transfer of Sama, along with Carson Hansen and Dylan Lee also entering the portal, the Cyclones will look to fill significant gaps in their roster. Heading into 2026, return specialist Aiden Flora stands out as the team’s leading returning rusher. Although Flora mainly played special teams, he made a mark with four carries for 58 yards and a touchdown last season.

As the Cyclones begin to prepare for the upcoming season, they face the challenge of rebuilding their offensive lineup. The transfer of key players may pave the way for new talent to emerge, offering a fresh opportunity for growth and development within the program. Iowa State will need to harness this transition to set a positive tone for the future.
