Iowa is bracing for a stormy weekend as heat and humidity build up today, with an increase in storm chances expected. Currently, the weather is calm across the state, particularly visible at the fairgrounds, but that will change as storms develop, particularly in northwest Iowa and parts of Nebraska.

This morning, temperatures are in the upper 70s with dew points in the low 70s, creating muggy conditions. A breeze from the south is also present at about 13 mph, offering some temporary relief. The weather radar indicates the formation of storm systems in the northern regions, with significant thunderstorm activity near Storm Lake and the potential for larger hail in moving storms.

As the day progresses, more moderate rain and showers are anticipated across northern Iowa, stretching from Algona to Emmetsburg, along with some light showers in Des Moines. A particularly concerning storm, with damaging winds gusting up to 80 mph, is tracking toward the Omaha-Council Bluffs area.

As evening approaches, the storm activity is expected to intensify, primarily impacting northern and north-central Iowa. The likelihood of severe weather, including strong winds and hail, remains a concern into Sunday morning. The storms are predicted to linger throughout the weekend, with additional rainfall expected Saturday afternoon and evening.

Temperatures are expected to reach into the 80s today and remain warm tonight, with similar conditions projected for Sunday. Following this stormy period, residents can look forward to a less turbulent weather pattern in the days ahead.

In light of this impending weather, it is wise for residents to stay informed and prepared for potential severe weather, taking precautions to ensure safety as storms roll in.
