On Friday afternoon, the University of Iowa community received a Hawk Alert urging students to shelter in place following reports of gunshots near the campus. The initial alert, issued at 1:51 p.m., indicated shots were fired around the intersection of E Burlington Street and S Governor Street, and that a suspect was moving eastbound. Shortly thereafter, an update stated the suspect had fled westbound on foot.

The Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) stated on social media that it was actively investigating the situation in the 900 block of E. Burlington Street. At 2:15 p.m., an update clarified that the shots were fired off-campus and advised students to remain cautious while continuing to shelter in place and report any suspicious behavior to emergency services.

A fourth Hawk Alert was sent out shortly after 2:30 p.m., reassuring students that the ICPD classified the incident as an “isolated incident” with no ongoing threat to public safety. Students were informed they could resume normal activities but should still stay vigilant.

ICPD reported responding to the shooting incident shortly before 1:30 p.m., with witnesses confirming they heard gunshots while officers collected evidence at the scene. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, as authorities continue to seek clarity on the events that transpired.

This swift response from the university and local police emphasizes the importance of safety protocols in maintaining the well-being of the campus community, allowing students to feel secure as they resume their educational activities.
