Reports from Down Detector indicated that users encountered problems with numerous platforms including Twitch, Gmail, Discord, Nintendo Switch Online, and Spotify. Both Google Cloud and Cloudflare acknowledged the problems, with a Cloudflare spokesperson pinpointing the issue as stemming from Google Cloud’s services. The spokesperson claimed, “This is a Google Cloud outage,” while noting that Cloudflare’s core services remained unaffected.
The initial diagnosis from Google Cloud indicated complications with its API management system, which were resolved approximately three hours after they began. Google Cloud’s CEO, Thomas Kurian, issued an apology via social media for the disruption, assuring customers that services were fully restored across all regions.
Cloudflare also expressed regret for the outage, taking responsibility for the impact of its dependencies. “We’re deeply sorry for this outage,” they stated, indicating that while the trigger was due to a failure from a third-party vendor, they remained accountable for their service architecture.
In the aftermath, users regained full internet access on Friday, easing the widespread panic seen due to the disruption.
