FIFA has announced that Inter Miami CF has secured a spot in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup™ after winning the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, which recognizes the team as the top performer during the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season. As the host country representative, Inter Miami earned this qualification through an impressive 34-match campaign, clinching the shield with two matches still to play in the MLS. The team will also kick off the tournament as the host team and will participate in the inaugural match of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ in Miami.
Under the leadership of FIFA World Cup™ champion Lionel Messi, Inter Miami set a new MLS record for the highest points in a single season, finishing the 2024 season with 74 points, including 22 wins, eight draws, and only four losses from February to October.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino shared the news during a celebratory event following Inter Miami’s final MLS match against New England Revolution at Chase Stadium on Saturday.
“Miami’s passion for football and Inter Miami’s widespread support across Florida and beyond is well-known,” Infantino stated. “Congratulations on your remarkable achievement with the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. You have proven to be the best club in the United States.”
“Therefore, I am pleased to announce that, as one of the world’s top clubs, you will proudly represent the United States in the new FIFA Club World Cup 2025.”
Inter Miami CF Managing Owner Jorge Mas expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments, saying, “We promised our fans that we would create a team capable of the highest competition. Achieving this milestone and being among the world’s elite in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 is momentous for our fans and community as we continue to promote soccer in North America.”
Infantino also confirmed that the global club tournament will open in Miami, stating, “We are excited for you to host the opening match on Sunday, June 15, 2025. This event promises to be a grand celebration of club football, showcasing the best 32 clubs worldwide and providing a platform for clubs, players, coaches, and fans to share their stories globally.”
With Inter Miami confirmed, 31 of the 32 clubs set to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 have been finalized. The last slot will be filled based on the results of the 2024 CONMEBOL Libertadores final scheduled for November 30, 2024, in Buenos Aires, with four renowned South American clubs still hoping to qualify.
