Quentin Tarantino is set to have his entire filmography celebrated in a new series of coffee table books published by Insight Editions, starting with “The Making of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’,” which is set for release this Tuesday. Author Jay Glennie, who has previously explored cinematic masterpieces like “Performance,” “Raging Bull,” and “The Deer Hunter,” aims to produce a comprehensive chronicle of each of Tarantino’s films, culminating with the director’s highly anticipated tenth project, details of which remain under wraps.
In the first book, Glennie discusses the genesis of “Once Upon a Time,” inspired by a chance encounter he had with Tarantino during a discussion about their mutual admiration for Michael Cimino’s works. The volume examines the evolution of the film from Tarantino’s initial idea, sparked by observing a conversation between a stunt double and actor, to its promotional campaign during the 2020 awards season. With extensive interviews from the cast and crew, along with behind-the-scenes photographs—many taken by famed set photographer Andrew Cooper—the book is both an artistic artifact and a well-researched narrative of Tarantino’s cinematic vision.
Glennie has already finished writing the next installment, focusing on Tarantino’s landmark film “Inglourious Basterds,” and is currently working on a book about “Django Unchained.” Tarantino will contribute introductions to each book, which are slated for release in 2026 and 2027, respectively. Glennie’s approach does not follow a linear chronology, adding an element of surprise with each release; for instance, “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction” are planned for future volumes as well.
Tarantino’s unique storytelling has also inspired Glennie to consider whether to document the making of the director’s upcoming film in real-time or approach it with the distance he prefers from past projects. Regardless of the choices ahead, Glennie emphasizes the immense trust and collaboration he has experienced in creating these works, capturing the essence of a filmmaking process that has left a lasting impact on cinema.
This series not only honors Tarantino’s contributions to film but also invites fans to delve deeper into the artistry that goes into creating unforgettable stories, ensuring that each volume becomes a treasured addition to cinephiles’ collections.
