Inside the Scandal: The Rise of #MomTok and Its Controversial Reality Show

In the summer of 2022, the Mormon influencer community faced a surprising scandal that took many by surprise. Taylor Frankie Paul, a married TikTok influencer and mother of two, revealed during a TikTok livestream that she and her husband were divorcing following their involvement in “soft swinging” with other couples in their Mormon social circle in the Salt Lake City area.

This revelation led to denials from Ms. Paul’s friend group, allegations of infidelity, and a series of unexpected disclosures that have continued to impact the so-called #MomTok influencers.

Now, the events surrounding the scandal have been chronicled in a new reality series for Hulu titled “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” which is set to premiere on Friday. The show aims to highlight the women involved and the controversy that ensued.

So, what exactly is #MomTok?

“I created MomTok,” Ms. Paul, 30, proudly states in the series trailer.

#MomTok refers to a group of young Mormon influencers who share TikTok videos featuring dancing, lip-syncing, and behaviors that challenge traditional expectations of religious women. According to Ms. Paul and her friends, including Mayci Neeley, Mikayla Mathews, and Whitney Leavitt, #MomTok is about breaking stereotypes regarding how Mormon mothers and wives should conduct themselves.
