Securing a restaurant reservation in New York has become increasingly challenging, with the process reaching new levels of difficulty over the past three years. For many aspiring diners, accessing the city’s most coveted dining experiences seems nearly impossible.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, shared his insights with Bloomberg, noting that certain restaurants have become completely inaccessible. He recounted discussions with restaurateurs who confessed they couldn’t offer any strategies to help diners secure a spot.

Last month, the New York state legislature took action by voting to prohibit third-party booking platforms like Appointment Trader, which allowed users to resell restaurant reservations for exorbitant prices, sometimes exceeding $200. This practice had been more commonly associated with the resale of concert and sports tickets.

Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed this legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector, stating it would lessen competition for reservations and provide restaurants protection from costly cancellations.

However, despite these legal measures, demand for unique and luxurious dining experiences continues to far exceed supply. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India highlighted the struggle to navigate the crowded landscape of restaurants, hotels, and other lavish experiences, pointing out that post-COVID trends have led to fully booked planes, restaurants, and hotels.
