Allegations have surfaced involving inmate Tevita Qaqanivalu, who reportedly sent text messages laced with vulgar language aimed at the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice. This has prompted the cancellation of his family visit and initiated a broader investigation within the Fiji Corrections Service.
Acting Commissioner of Corrections, Auta Moceisuva, confirmed that Qaqanivalu is ineligible for family visitation due to ongoing disciplinary issues and non-compliance with prison regulations. Moceisuva stated, “Tevita Qaqanivalu does not qualify for family visit due to his constant misbehavior and uncooperative attitude towards lawful authority.”
The investigation is particularly focused on the alleged vulgar messages directed towards the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, raising significant concerns within the Corrections Service about the potential use of a mobile phone by an inmate. Such an act would breach crucial prison rules and security protocols.
While the Acting Commissioner did not disclose the findings of the investigation, he emphasized that the situation is being taken very seriously and will be addressed in accordance with Corrections policies and due process. The developments highlight the ongoing challenges faced by correctional facilities in maintaining security and order, especially concerning the unauthorized communication by prisoners.
