Twitter erupted with criticism following Ingrid Andress’s performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the 2024 Home Run Derby at Arlington’s Globe Life Field. The Grammy-nominated country singer faced backlash online for missing several notes during her rendition of the national anthem.
Known for her experience as a performer, having opened for artists like Stevie Nicks and Keith Urban, Andress was compared unfavorably to Fergie’s infamous performance at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.
“Uhhh… that anthem was interesting. Sung by Ingrid Andress,” read one viral tweet. Another harshly stated, “My ears are bleeding. One of the worst national anthem renditions ever.”
The criticism emerged shortly after Andress announced that she will release a new single titled “Colorado 9” on July 24, nearly a year after her second album, Good Person, was released last August. She is scheduled to perform in Nashville on Wednesday and in Denver on July 24.
A talented songwriter, Andress has penned tracks for artists such as LANY, Charli XCX, and Fletcher, establishing herself as a promising figure in country music. Her debut album, Lady Like, earned her three Grammy nominations in 2021, including Best New Artist and Best Country Song for “More Hearts Than Mine.” She also received a nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Wishful Drinking” with Sam Hunt in 2023.
In an interview with Rolling Stone last year upon the release of Good Person, Andress shared, “I feel like I am a lot more comfortable being authentic and vulnerable with people. I think I’ve found there’s power in being honest and vulnerable. I feel like being in love is making me realize that there’s a lot of power in feminine energy.”
