Indonesian officials are currently probing food poisoning incidents affecting nearly 700 children in the Yogyakarta province, following meals served under President Prabowo Subianto’s free school meal initiative. This program, launched in January as a significant part of Prabowo’s election campaign, has seen approximately 15,000 children reporting illnesses as of late October, according to local non-governmental organization JPPI.
Regional head Endah Subekti Kuntariningsih confirmed that about 660 students from two different schools became ill after consuming the free meals. Preliminary investigations have attributed these health issues to improper food storage and delayed delivery of cooked meals. In response to the alarming situation, the JPPI has called for a suspension of the school meal program until safety measures can be ensured.
Dadan Hindayana, the head of the national nutrition agency (BGN), indicated that authorities are investigating the occurrences in Gunungkidul and have temporarily shut down nearby meal preparation facilities to uncover the cause and prevent further incidents.
This troubling development underscores growing concerns regarding food safety standards in Indonesia, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children.
