The Indiana Fever’s game against the Phoenix Mercury on Friday was a showcase of remarkable offensive play, leading to the creation of new franchise records.
Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston made history as the first duo in Fever history to record 20-point double-doubles in the same game. Clark set additional records, breaking the franchise mark for most assists in a single quarter with seven and for most assists in a single game with 13. This performance has seen Clark match her own franchise record for assists four times in her first 24 career games.
Clark expressed her excitement about contributing to the team’s dynamic offense. “It’s so fun, just getting to pick apart the defense,” Clark said. “Especially when we get stops on defense and get to go in transition.”
All three of Indiana’s All-Stars—Kelsey Mitchell, Caitlin Clark, and Aliyah Boston—scored in double digits by halftime, securing a 20-point lead at the break. Mitchell led with 17 first-half points, followed by Clark with 15, and Boston with 10. Clark’s assists played a crucial role, with seven of her nine first-half assists aiding Boston or Mitchell.
In the end, each member of the All-Star trio scored over 20 points—Mitchell led with 28, followed by Boston with 21, and Clark with 20. Boston also dominated the rebounds with 13, while Clark led in assists with 13.
Clark highlighted the team’s speed and synergy in recent games. “I think as a unit we’re starting to play faster…I’m just learning every single day,” she said. Her performance, including a streak of five consecutive double-doubles, underscores her growing confidence and skill at the professional level. With eight double-doubles, she holds the WNBA record for the most such games by a rookie guard.
Coach Christie Sides praised Clark’s ability to read the game and create opportunities. “She’s got the ability to draw several defenders, she’s got a crazy eye for her teammates and where they are moving…that’s just what she’s capable of,” Sides remarked.
Clark is currently second in the WNBA in assists per game, averaging 7.8, just behind Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas. In July, she is averaging 12.5 assists per game and remains on pace to set a new monthly record.
The Indiana Fever, now 2-2 in July, aim to secure more victories before the Olympic Break. Their next games are against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday and the Dallas Wings on Wednesday.
