India is enhancing its pandemic preparedness by introducing an AI-enabled tool under the National One Health Mission (NOHM), spearheaded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This innovative system aims to proactively monitor emerging and novel pathogens, allowing for early detection of zoonotic diseases, viral infections, bacterial illnesses, and parasitic threats, all with the goal of preventing outbreaks before they escalate.

By leveraging artificial intelligence, the new system signifies a shift from a reactive response to a predictive model in disease surveillance. The ICMR has called for Expressions of Interest (EoI) from qualified organizations capable of developing AI-enabled tools that integrate data from humans, animals, and environmental factors. This interconnected approach is designed to recognize early warning signs through the analysis of various data streams, ultimately identifying patterns and unusual clusters that can indicate potential health risks.

The AI tool will keep a watchful eye on a wide range of diseases. Among the viral threats, it will monitor diseases such as Zika, Nipah, and Coronaviruses. On the bacterial front, attention will be given to infections like anthrax and plague, while parasitic threats, including Kala Azar, will also be tracked. The comprehensive coverage across zoonotic, viral, bacterial, and parasitic categories aims to establish a broad safety net for public health.

India’s approach marks a significant evolution in its public health strategy, moving away from waiting for outbreaks to occur and instead creating a framework that emphasizes early detection and risk assessment.
