India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, has reaffirmed India’s steadfast dedication to enhancing its partnership with Fiji and the wider Pacific region, marking the relationship as one built on trust, shared values, and strong interpersonal connections. Speaking at India’s Republic Day Reception held at the Novotel Lami, Mehta underscored ongoing collaborative initiatives aimed at uplifting the living standards of citizens in both nations.
He asserted, “We will build a future that is brighter, more prosperous, and more inclusive for our peoples,” while also recognizing the rich historical ties between India and Fiji. Mehta highlighted the vital contributions of the Girmitiya community in shaping Fiji’s social, cultural, and economic fabric since the 19th century, and acknowledged the ongoing influence of the Indian diaspora in essential sectors such as agriculture, trade, education, and public service.
Mehta identified 2025 as a crucial year for reinforcing bilateral relations, with significant political interactions planned. He referenced the recent visit of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu to India and anticipated Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s landmark visit to India in August 2025, which is expected to yield key agreements symbolizing the essence of “Veilomani Dosti,” or a friendship grounded in mutual respect.
A focal point of this partnership is the healthcare sector, where India has committed to establishing a 100-bed Super Specialty Hospital in Suva. This facility is designed to act as a critical regional hub for advanced medical services, reinforcing India’s dedication to bolstering healthcare resilience in Fiji and throughout the Pacific. The tender process is currently underway, with construction set to commence shortly.
Additionally, the discussions on cooperation are expanding to encompass defense, agriculture, education, and capacity building. Looking ahead, Mehta emphasized that India’s expertise in renewable energy, digital technologies, and climate resilience presents new opportunities for collaboration, whether bilaterally or through broader regional and multilateral platforms.
Mehta reiterated India’s commitment to partnering with Fiji and other Pacific Island nations in fostering sustainable growth, resilience, and shared prosperity. This collaborative spirit not only benefits individual nations but also represents a collective stride towards a prosperous future for the entire region. As these initiatives unfold, they signal a hopeful outlook for not only India and Fiji but for the Pacific Islands more broadly, as they work together towards common goals.
