Tensions between India and the European Union (EU) over energy relations with Russia have come to the forefront. Despite the EU’s ongoing concerns regarding India’s procurement of Russian oil, the Indian government pushed back, indirectly referencing U.S. President Donald Trump’s critique of European dependencies on Russian energy. Trump’s prior comments accusing European nations of failing to cut energy ties with Russia highlight the complexity of international interactions amid geopolitical tensions.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has emphasized that India’s engagement with Russian oil is a significant issue, especially as both parties work towards finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of the year. The India-EU relationship encompasses more than trade; it relates to upholding a rules-based international order. Nevertheless, EU officials have not yet considered imposing tariffs or sanctions on India for its oil purchases from Russia.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs, through its spokesman Randhir Jaiswal, pointed out the inconsistency in global perspectives, stating that calls for halting energy imports from Russia should apply uniformly, without exceptions. This sentiment echoes President Trump’s recently expressed disappointment at the UN General Assembly, where he noted that even NATO countries have continued energy relationships with Russia.
Adding another layer to the conversation, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused Europeans of essentially funding a war by buying energy refined from Russian oil originally sold to India at a discount. He pointed out the irony in these transactions, which see refined Russian oil products ultimately making their way back to Europe.
