India’s infrastructure diplomacy in the Maldives is gaining traction under President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, as displayed by the progress of significant projects like Hanimaadhoo International Airport and the Thilamale Bridge. This shift reflects a transformation in the bilateral relations between India and the Maldives, emphasizing collaboration and shared goals.

According to Maldives’ Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Abdulla Muththalib, the Hanimaadhoo International Airport is on track for completion by September 2025, with 88.7% of the construction completed, including the fully finished runway and advancing passenger terminal. The airport’s funding comes from a line of credit provided by India’s Exim Bank, reinforcing India’s commitment to Maldivian development.

Further illustrating this renewed partnership is the Thilamale Bridge project, which has surpassed 60% completion. The ambitious bridge will connect Male to nearby islands and is financed through a combination of a $100 million Indian grant and a $400 million concessional line of credit from India. This project, awarded to India’s Afcons Infrastructure in August 2021, is characterized by its engineering prowess, featuring the tallest precast segments in the world at 8.2 meters.

Additionally, there are discussions about a potential visit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Maldives, possibly coinciding with the island nation’s Independence Day on July 26. Such a visit would mark Modi’s first trip under Muizzu’s presidency and represents an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral ties.

This positive momentum in India-Maldives relations is promising, suggesting a future built on mutual cooperation and development, solidifying India’s role as a key partner in the region.
