Alejandro González Iñárritu and Tom Cruise are set to make a splash in the fall movie season of 2026 with their untitled feature, scheduled for release on October 2, 2026, as announced by Warner Bros. This film will take over the release date previously reserved for Matt Reeves’ sequel to The Batman, which has now been pushed back to October 1, 2027. The sequel has undergone several scheduling changes since its announcement in 2022, reflecting Reeves’ dedication to refining the script.
James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, expressed on social media that Reeves is fully committed to crafting an exceptional film, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the scriptwriting timeline and the significant time required for pre-production, filming, and post-production of major motion pictures.
Additionally, there has been a scheduling shift for two upcoming films: Robert Pattinson’s The Batman and Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 will swap release dates with Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners. Mickey 17 is now set to premiere on March 7, 2025, while Sinners will debut on April 18, 2025, due to production delays attributed to Coogler’s preference for shooting on film and limited availability of lab resources.
The collaborative project between Cruise and Iñárritu marks an important milestone for both filmmakers. Iñárritu’s film will be his first English-language movie in nearly ten years since The Revenant. In this untitled project, Cruise portrays a character with immense power who embarks on a desperate quest to demonstrate his role as humanity’s savior before a catastrophic event unfolds. The film features a strong cast, including Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed, and will be produced by Iñárritu alongside Cruise and Legendary’s Mary Parent.
This dynamic collaboration promises not only to bring compelling storytelling to theaters but also highlights the dedication of filmmakers committed to bringing their visions to life, even amid challenges. As filmmakers adapt and adjust to ever-changing circumstances, audiences can look forward to an exciting lineup of films in the coming years.
