A Delta Air Lines flight experienced an emergency situation on Monday when a battery likely belonging to a passenger caught fire mid-flight. Flight 1334, which was traveling from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale with approximately 185 individuals on board, was diverted to Fort Myers due to residual smoke in the cabin.
Delta officials confirmed that the quick actions of the flight attendants were instrumental in extinguishing the burning battery while the pilots promptly executed emergency protocols for a safe landing. “We appreciate the quick work and actions by our people to follow their training, and we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels,” the airline stated.
As the aircraft undergoes evaluation, Delta is also focusing on accommodating affected passengers. This incident highlights a growing concern regarding lithium-ion batteries, which power a wide array of personal devices.
Jeff Marootian, president and CEO of UL Standards & Engagement, noted the increasing frequency of such incidents but reassured that many are preventable. He recommended that travelers be vigilant about their packing choices, stressing that devices powered by lithium-ion batteries—ranging from smartphones to laptops—should always be kept in the cabin rather than checked baggage. “If a fire were to happen in checked luggage, the outcome could be very different,” he commented.
