The International Labour Organization (ILO) recently celebrated its 50th anniversary of engagement in the Pacific, marking the occasion with the opening of the inaugural Pacific Regional Tripartite Conference in Nadi. The event gathered pivotal figures, including government leaders, policymakers, employers, and workers’ representatives, to discuss regional issues tied to employment, security, and united prosperity. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the significance of this milestone as not just a commemoration but a step forward in securing a sustainable future for the region.
Prime Minister Rabuka paid tribute to the ILO for its longstanding support and its core principle of tripartism, which brings together governments, employers, and workers in equal partnership. He highlighted that this collaboration has been fundamental to the development of resilient and inclusive policies, shaping the Pacific labor landscape through a combination of skills development programs, legal reforms, and projects focused on workplace safety and social protection.
Beyond reflecting on past achievements, the conference focused on future challenges, notably climate change, digital disruption, and labor mobility. An important outcome of the discussions was the launch of the Regional Permanent Secretary Employment Talanoa Forum, along with a Technical Working Group aimed at fostering inclusive and people-centered solutions.
Throughout its history in the Pacific, the ILO has actively worked to promote decent work and equitable labor standards. Prior to establishing its office in 1975, the ILO provided technical support and programs to the Pacific Islands from its Geneva headquarters. In partnership with local governments and organizations, the ILO has catalyzed social dialogue, promoted employment cooperation, and worked to address regional vulnerabilities.
The conference presented a unique opportunity to reinforce the commitment to shared prosperity within the tripartite framework.
