Multiple tornadoes were reported in Illinois as thunderstorms swept through the Midwest on Monday. Over 13 million people were under tornado warnings or watch alerts.
A series of “destructive thunderstorms” passed through northeastern Illinois, including Chicago, on Monday night, with several tornadoes being reported, according to the National Weather Service’s Chicago bureau. The agency noted that its staff had to briefly take shelter from a tornado.
Just before 9 p.m., the agency reported a radar-confirmed tornado near Sugar Grove, about 40 miles west of Chicago.
Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports issued severe weather warnings on social media on Monday night. According to flight tracking website FlightAware, 70 flights were canceled and over 500 were delayed at the two airports.
