The Illinois Tollway has implemented 24-hour hot weather patrols to assist motorists during the extreme heat conditions expected to persist through Friday. These additional crews are aimed at quickly locating and helping drivers who may find themselves stranded on the tollway system due to various vehicle issues, such as overheating or fuel shortages.
Unlike the regular Highway Emergency Lane Patrol (H.E.L.P.) that operates from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, the new hot weather patrols will be on duty around the clock. A minimum of 12 patrol units will be deployed during the heatwave to enhance coverage and support. Motorists in need of assistance can call *999, providing their location details to expedite help.
The hot weather patrols are equipped with specialized trucks that feature arrow boards to manage traffic around stranded vehicles. These vehicles can also offer shelter for passengers if they need a break from the heat or require transport to a maintenance garage or tollway oasis.
To ensure a safer summer travel experience, the Illinois Tollway urges drivers to take necessary precautions, including keeping tires properly inflated to prevent blowouts, maintaining appropriate fluid levels in the engine to avoid overheating, and preparing an emergency kit in their vehicles. They also remind customers that tollway oases provide a great opportunity to rest and check vehicle conditions.
This proactive response not only highlights the Illinois Tollway’s commitment to motorist safety but also encourages drivers to be vigilant and prepared while traveling during high-temperature conditions.
