Eligible taxpayers in Illinois can take advantage of the IRS Direct File program for the upcoming tax season. The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) has announced that they will start processing 2024 tax returns today, aligning with the IRS’s kickoff for federal tax returns.
Through the IRS Direct File program, eligible Illinois taxpayers can file their federal tax returns directly with the IRS at no cost. This program makes it easy to transfer tax information into IDOR’s MyTax Illinois platform, enabling users to file their state taxes efficiently. Both platforms prioritize security and user-friendliness, accommodating mobile access as well. Taxpayers can verify their eligibility for the IRS Direct File program on the IRS website.
IDOR Director David Harris emphasized the advantages of the Direct File option: “Taxpayers can benefit from free federal tax return filing, step-by-step guidance, and real-time online support. By using verified Direct File information, taxpayers can file their state taxes for free through MyTax Illinois, helping save time and minimize the chance of errors.”
For those planning to file, electronic submission is encouraged to expedite processing and refunds. Taxpayers who file an accurate electronic Illinois return can expect their refunds within approximately four weeks, provided they choose direct deposit. Alternative filing methods include tax-prep software, professional tax assistance, or the traditional paper Form IL-1040.
The tax filing deadline is set for Tuesday, April 15, 2025. While a six-month extension may be requested, it is important to note that any owed taxes must still be paid by the original due date.
MyTax Illinois not only facilitates free filing but also provides tools for making payments, responding to inquiries, checking refund statuses, retrieving IL-PINs, and reviewing estimated tax payments. For those needing assistance, IDOR has dedicated taxpayer support hotlines and offers resources for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) individuals.
In summary, this program aims to simplify the tax filing process for Illinois residents, ensuring they have access to useful tools and resources for both their federal and state tax obligations.
