This appearance marks the 21st bowl game in the history of the Illinois football program, and they are looking forward to their second New Year’s bowl game in just three seasons—following their participation in the 2023 ReliaQuest Bowl. Notably, this will be Illinois’ first return to the Citrus Bowl since the 1989 season, where they triumphed over Virginia with a 31-21 score.
Director of Athletics Josh Whitman expressed pride in accepting the invitation, thanking Florida Citrus Sports for the opportunity. He noted that this prestigious bowl game is a fitting reward for a team that has achieved nine wins and a Top 20 national ranking, marking one of the most remarkable seasons in Illinois football history. With a record of 9-3 and having won nine or more regular-season games for just the eighth time in their history, the Illini are also attempting to secure a milestone 10th win, which would tie the program record for wins in a season.
