As America approaches its 249th birthday, public safety officials in Washoe County, Nevada, are emphasizing the importance of ensuring a safe Fourth of July celebration. Adam Mayberry, a Public Information Officer with the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, reminds residents that while fireworks are popular, they are illegal in the county due to the significant dangers they pose.

Lieutenant Nick Tone from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office explains that fireworks can be purchased in nearby areas, such as Tribal Lands, but any possession, use, or storage of fireworks within unincorporated parts of Washoe County is against the law. The penalties for violating this law can be severe, with fines reaching up to $1,000 and possible jail time of up to six months for misdemeanors. Additionally, individuals can be held liable for expenses related to fire suppression and hazardous material disposal.

Officials are urging the public to report any sightings of fireworks by calling the non-emergency number 785-WCSO, while stressing that in case of an active fire, 911 should be called immediately. The risks associated with fireworks are alarming; they can reach temperatures of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, capable of causing serious burns and igniting fires. Mayberry highlights that fireworks are a leading cause of brush fires during this time of year and can result in severe injuries, including loss of limbs and damage to hearing and eyesight.

A report from the National Fire Protection Association indicates that in 2022, U.S. emergency rooms treated over 10,000 injuries related to fireworks, with more than half of those injuries affecting extremities.

Residents are encouraged to celebrate responsibly this Independence Day by avoiding the use of illegal fireworks, ensuring a safer environment for everyone. By adhering to these guidelines, the community can enjoy a festive occasion while prioritizing safety.
