Iconic OPM Legend Freddie Aguilar Passes Away at 72

Freddie Aguilar, a prominent figure in Original Pilipino Music (OPM), has reportedly passed away at the age of 72. The sad news was confirmed by George Briones, the general counsel of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP). Aguilar, who previously served as the national executive vice president of PFP, died at approximately 1:30 a.m. on May 27 at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City.

Sources from the Philippine Heart Association indicated that Aguilar had been transferred to the Heart Center from another facility before his passing. While efforts have been made to confirm details with the hospital, they advised waiting for an official announcement from Aguilar’s family, referencing the Data Privacy Act that safeguards patient information.

It has been reported that preparations for his burial are being conducted in accordance with his Muslim faith and are expected to take place within 24 hours.

Freddie Aguilar gained international recognition for his poignant song “Anak,” which has been translated into numerous languages, resonating with audiences around the world. He was also appointed by former President Rodrigo Duterte as the Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts, further emphasizing his influence in the arts and culture sector of the Philippines.
