Iamaleava’s Transfer: No Bad Blood with Oregon’s Lanning

LAS VEGAS — Former five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who recently transferred from Tennessee to UCLA, has expressed no resentment towards Oregon’s coach, Dan Lanning, amid the complexities surrounding his transfer process. This marks Iamaleava’s first public comments since his move in the spring, where he addressed the rumors and speculations that accompanied his decision.

Reports emerged in April that Tennessee had learned of talks between Iamaleava’s representatives and Oregon, although the Ducks reportedly showed no interest. Following this, speculation arose that Lanning may have contacted Tennessee coach Josh Heupel, although Lanning later stated he does not recall making such a call.

Iamaleava sought to clarify the situation, stating, “I don’t know where all that comes from. I’m hearing from (the media) just like you guys are hearing it. With all that situation, I just focus on football and let my business side of the team handle that.” Detailing his past interactions, Iamaleava reflected fondly on his relationship with Lanning, asserting, “I have nothing but respect for coach Dan Lanning.”

Earlier in the recruiting process, Iamaleava was pursued by Oregon as the No. 3 prospect in the 2023 class, just ahead of Dante Moore, who ultimately signed with UCLA and has since transferred to Oregon, where he is anticipated to be the starting quarterback this season.

Overall, the dynamic between Lanning and Iamaleava appears amicable, with both parties maintaining professional respect, which bodes well for any future interactions. This highlights a trend in college football where players are more focused on their personal development and relationships rather than public controversies.
