Iam Tongi: From American Idol to Disney Star – A Journey of Heart and Heritage

Iam Tongi first captured the world’s attention during his heartfelt audition for American Idol in 2023, ultimately winning the competition and making history as the first Pacific Islander champion. A proud Latter-day Saint from Kahuku, Hawaii, Iam attributes his success to the unwavering support of his family and Heavenly Father. He expressed, “If it wasn’t for my father and Heavenly Father, then I wouldn’t be here in this competition. When I follow Christ, then it always works out. I can’t deny it.”

Since his success on American Idol, Iam has expanded his musical repertoire, releasing several tracks including a poignant rendition of “Silent Night” featuring the Rexburg Children’s Choir. His latest project is particularly exciting as he lends his voice to “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” for Disney’s upcoming film Lilo and Stitch, accompanied by the Kamehameha Schools Children’s Chorus.

Iam described his participation in the film as a significant honor, sharing that Lilo and Stitch is deeply woven into the lives of those who grew up in the Pacific Islands. “It’s crazy how many times I would watch it with all my cousins and all my friends,” he recalled. Director Dean Fleischer Camp emphasized the importance of culturally authentic voices in the film, highlighting Iam’s connection to Hawaiian culture.

The film’s themes of ‘ohana and family resonate with Iam, who hopes his rendition of the beloved song will endure in the memories of a new generation. He previously performed “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” on American Idol, showcasing his deep connection to the song that embodies the spirit of family and community.

Iam Tongi’s journey serves as an inspiring story of faith and resilience, reminding us of the profound connections we share with our roots and loved ones through music and culture.
