The International Association of Machinists (IAM), which is attempting to organize Delta Air Lines ground workers, has called for an investigation into a tire explosion at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport that resulted in the deaths of two Delta employees and left one injured.

The union expressed its commitment to the safety and well-being of its members and the community. In a statement, IAM said, “As a union dedicated to the well-being and safety of our members and the broader community, we will offer our resources to all those impacted by this tragic event. We stand in unity with Delta workers during this difficult time and we call on Delta and the relevant authorities to quickly launch a thorough investigation into how this happened.”

With a representation of 100,000 airline workers across North America, IAM is focused on unionizing Delta’s ramp workers, tower workers, and baggage handlers. Meanwhile, the Teamsters union is advocating for mechanics at the airline. Just last month, IAM representatives held a rally near the airport in support of unionization efforts.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens conveyed his “deepest condolences” to the families of the deceased and offered thoughts for the injured in a post on social media. He confirmed that police, fire, and airport officials were promptly on the scene.

Delta TechOps Chief of Operations John Laughter informed TechOps employees in a memo that an accident occurred early in the morning at the Wheel & Brake Shop, resulting in two fatalities and one serious injury among the team. He stated, “We are extending our full support to their families at this difficult time and conducting an investigation to determine what happened.”

A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines confirmed that the airline is cooperating with local authorities and conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
