The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed significant damage inflicted on the Pakistani side during Operation Sindoor, revealing that six aircraft were downed, including five fighter jets and a large airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft. This revelation follows the IAF’s operations carried out in response to the Pahalgam attack on April 22, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives.

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh detailed the operation during the 16th Air Chief Marshal LM Katre Lecture in Bengaluru, citing that Pakistan’s air strength suffered a considerable setback due to the loss of the AEW&C aircraft and various other assets. The operation marked the largest recorded surface-to-air kill, with strikes conducted from a distance of 300 kilometers. Singh also highlighted that the newly acquired Russian-made S-400 missile system played a crucial role in ensuring that Pakistani aircraft could not effectively penetrate Indian air defenses.

In addition to the aerial strikes on the aircraft, the IAF targeted hangars in Jacobabad and Bholari, destroying several US-made F-16s that were undergoing maintenance. The Air Chief reiterated that the magnitude of the damage prompted Pakistan to seek a ceasefire, ending hostilities on May 10.

Singh praised the political leadership’s commitment, stating that the military was given the freedom to plan and execute the operation without constraints. He noted the significance of clear directives that allowed for a mature escalation of the situation and attributed the success of the operation to this strategic freedom.

The IAF executed strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, resulting in the elimination of over a hundred terrorists. Singh also showcased before-and-after satellite images of the targeted terror sites, asserting that such evidence was vital for validating the operation’s success, particularly in light of prior engagements like the Balakot airstrike.

Overall, Operation Sindoor reflects India’s increasing capability and strategic resolve in addressing cross-border terrorism, demonstrating a commitment to national security and the protection of its citizens. The operation stands as a clear message regarding India’s readiness to protect its sovereignty when faced with threats.
