Hurts’ Controversial “Win” Over Concussion Protocol Raises Eyebrows

During the latter part of the first half of Thursday night’s game against the Commanders, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had to go into the medical tent for a preliminary concussion assessment. However, by the time halftime arrived, Hurts was already out of the tent and jogging back to the locker room.

Following the game, Hurts addressed the situation, stating, “I guess I beat the protocol.” When further pressed about how that was possible, he simply reiterated, “I beat the protocol.” Regarding his feelings about being evaluated, he responded, “It happens. Was I surprised? I don’t know.”

It was unexpected for Hurts to be evaluated at that specific moment, especially considering he had not been checked after a failed trick play, which had seen him hit his head against the ground with considerable force. Observers noted that it would have likely warranted assessment at that time, given that there are designated personnel whose role is to monitor players for potential concussions.

Hurts’ comments about “beating the protocol” reflect a prevalent mindset among many players, who often see concussion protocols as obstacles instead of essential health measures. It underscores the critical necessity for the NFL to treat concussion evaluations as vital healthcare interventions rather than mere protocols to be navigated.

With positive strides being made in player safety, there’s hope that the league will continue to shift its focus, ensuring that protocols serve their intended purpose as protective measures for the well-being of athletes. This will ultimately foster a safer environment for players, allowing them to prioritize their health without feeling the pressure to rush back into play.
