Climate activist Greta Thunberg is currently aboard the Madleen, a boat attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has ordered the military to prevent the vessel from reaching its destination, referring to Thunberg and her companions as “Hamas propaganda mouthpieces.”
The Madleen is carrying a diverse group of 12 activists from countries including Germany, France, Brazil, Turkey, Sweden, Spain, and the Netherlands. French MEP Rima Hassan highlighted that over 200 European lawmakers have signed a letter urging Israel to allow the Madleen’s passage and its humanitarian cargo into Gaza. Hassan expressed concern about the lack of responses from the nations of the crew members, stating that it sends a troubling message about Israel’s perceived impunity in the situation.
French official Laurent Saint-Martin asserted that France is obligated to provide consular protection to its citizens on board the Madleen, which is now reported to be in Egyptian waters. The boat is part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which aims to challenge the Israeli blockade by delivering crucial aid to those in need.
Minister Katz reiterated that Israel will not permit any breach of the naval blockade intended to prevent arms from reaching Hamas, emphasizing that any attempts to bypass it by sea, air, or land will be met with military action. The blockade has been criticized internationally for exacerbating humanitarian crises in Gaza, where civilian casualties have increased dramatically since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023.
