Paul Finebaum has issued a stark warning directed at Auburn Tigers’ Head Coach Hugh Freeze amidst recent struggles in public recruitment. The ESPN radio host shared insights into the shifting sentiments within the Tigers’ fanbase regarding Coach Freeze, particularly following a week filled with setbacks.
During an appearance on ‘McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning’, Finebaum expressed concern over Freeze’s ability to navigate the mounting expectations. “I don’t know if you can solve that problem in a week, but you better be forceful, Greg. And that’s not really Hugh Freeze’s forte,” he remarked. He acknowledged that Freeze is generally considered a likeable figure, yet he noted a growing suspicion among some fans about his demeanor, describing them as thinking he is “insecure” and “thin-skinned,” particularly when it comes to criticism.
Auburn’s recent history, with four consecutive losing seasons, has placed substantial pressure on Freeze to produce a turnaround. Despite previous optimism about the upcoming season due to strong recruiting classes, that sense of hope appears to be waning. Finebaum mentioned that what was once a firm alignment between Freeze and the fanbase is now increasingly fragile. “I thought he had done a good enough job with the fan base and in recruiting that even if it was a seven or eight-win season, the argument would be you have to stand behind Coach Freeze because of the alignment,” he stated. “I’m not sure that alignment is there anymore.”
