CALGARY — Jonathan Huberdeau is optimistic that a revamped summer workout routine will bolster his confidence and enhance his performance with the Calgary Flames this season.

After recording 52 points (12 goals, 40 assists) in 81 games last season, Huberdeau is entering the second year of his eight-year, $84 million contract, which averages $10.5 million annually.

“I believe I’ve gained more speed… I’m not the fastest player, but I feel more powerful,” Huberdeau stated on Tuesday. “I had a productive summer, probably my best in terms of training. I also spent more time skating, which has me feeling better overall.”

He expressed his intention to channel this confidence into teamwork, stating, “This season, I want to bring some fun back into my game, which is crucial for us as a team. We can be surprising if we approach it with the right mindset.”

Huberdeau’s two-year stint with Calgary has not met expectations thus far. The 31-year-old, who was traded from the Florida Panthers, along with defenseman MacKenzie Weegar and others, for forward Matthew Tkachuk, has amassed 107 points (27 goals, 80 assists) in 160 games since the move. This followed a career-best season with Florida, where he recorded 115 points (30 goals, 85 assists) in 2021-22.

Calgary general manager Craig Conroy emphasized Huberdeau’s dedication: “He revamped his summer training and is extremely competitive. He has high aspirations for himself and the team. He’s putting pressure on himself but needs to remember it’s a collective effort.”

Last season, the Flames (38-39-5) placed fifth in the Pacific Division and missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs, resulting in several mid-season trades. Key players such as Nikita Zadorov, Chris Tanev, and Elias Lindholm were traded before the NHL Trade Deadline, while Andrew Mangiapane and Jacob Markstrom were dealt to other teams this summer.

Huberdeau is now positioned to help steer a younger Flames squad. “We have a mix of experienced leaders and young talent,” he remarked. “It’s our job to mentor these younger players. They arrive in great shape and are eager to contribute. It’s exciting to see the potential of this team, and it starts now. We can be a formidable opponent every night, and the determination starts with us.”

He concluded with a focus on enjoyment, saying, “Even if challenges arise this season, we have to embrace the experience. I’ll be emphasizing the importance of having fun throughout.”
