Hiccup and Toothless are making their live-action debut!
Universal Studios has unveiled the first trailer for its live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon,” following the success of the beloved DreamWorks Animation trilogy released in the 2010s. This eagerly awaited film is set to hit theaters on June 13.
The live-action adaptation features many familiar characters, portrayed by a new cast. Mason Thames, known for “The Black Phone,” stars as Hiccup, while Nico Parker from “Dumbo” and “The Last of Us” takes on the role of Astrid. Julian Dennison, recognizable from “Deadpool 2,” plays Fishlegs Ingerman. Notably, Gerard Butler reprises his role as Hiccup’s father, Stoick the Vast, after voicing the character in the animated series.
The trailer highlights key moments, introducing Hiccup, Stoick, and Toothless, who closely resemble their animated versions. As part of his Viking training, Hiccup is tasked with slaying a dragon but instead forms a bond with the lovable Toothless.
Dean DeBlois, the writer and director of the three animated “How to Train Your Dragon” films, is overseeing the live-action adaptation as well. The franchise, based on Cressida Cowell’s book series, follows Hiccup on the Isle of Berk, where he discovers and befriends a trapped dragon, leading to an adventure beyond dragon-slaying. The franchise has been a massive success, with more than $1.6 billion in global earnings, complemented by TV series, theme park attractions, and the live performance “How to Train Your Dragon on Ice.”
This new live-action version not only brings beloved characters to life but also reignites the magic and themes of friendship and courage that have captivated audiences for years. Fans have plenty to look forward to as they rejoin Hiccup and Toothless on their thrilling journey.
