Despite being featured on HBO’s Young Comedians Show early in his career, Apatow made the unexpected decision to abandon stand-up comedy just as he was beginning to gain traction. One influential figure in this decision was none other than Jim Henson, the legendary creator of “Sesame Street.”
Sharing a small apartment in the Valley with Adam Sandler, Apatow remembered an audition for an innovative show where comedians would film themselves on video cameras, a concept that was just breaking into the mainstream. Excited and full of ideas, he teamed up with Sandler to create a submission for the show.
The outcome was mixed—while Apatow didn’t land the role as a traveling comedian, Henson was intrigued by his ideas and expressed interest in purchasing them. Yet, he received some tough feedback: Henson felt Apatow lacked warmth, which was ultimately a blow to the young comedian’s confidence.
Apatow relayed this experience during an appearance on the “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend” podcast, humorously lamenting that the same beloved figure who had once taught him to read through Kermit the Frog’s eyes was now indirectly saying he wasn’t warm enough for the spotlight.
