Houston Weather: Weekend Storms Followed by a Cold Snap

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to return to Houston on Saturday, accompanied by a low-end severe weather risk rated at marginal (1/5). While any severe weather is anticipated to be isolated, residents can prepare for potentially stormy conditions. Following Saturday’s weather, significantly colder temperatures are predicted for Sunday, with highs only reaching the 50s, and Monday is expected to bring periods of rain with temperatures struggling to reach the 40s.

In the spirit of community, a heartfelt thank you goes out to all those who worked during the Thanksgiving holiday, including staff at the National Weather Service and other essential personnel.

On the weather front, Saturday morning should remain relatively calm with only a few showers or light drizzle possible. As the day progresses, particularly in the afternoon, scattered showers are expected to develop, especially north and west of Downtown Houston. An isolated strong to severe storm could occur after 2 or 3 PM, with all modes of severe weather—strong winds, hail, and possibly isolated tornadoes—being potential threats, although the likelihood remains low.

During Saturday evening, isolated stronger storms may continue north and west of Houston, while a line of moderate thunderstorms is forecast to form and move southward, arriving at the coast by early Sunday morning. Wind gusts may reach up to 40 miles per hour, particularly around Galveston Bay, but the risk of tornadoes or hail is projected to diminish.

Rainfall totals for Saturday are predicted to be around an inch or less, with some regions potentially experiencing 1 to 2 inches. After midnight, the storms should move offshore, leading to improved conditions along with north winds that could gust between 30 and 35 miles per hour.

As for Sunday, a chillier and overcast day awaits, with temperatures stabilizing in the low 50s. There may be brief appearances of sunshine as temperatures lift slightly into the mid-50s, depending on cloud cover.

Looking ahead to Monday, a new storm system will move in during the night, bringing a wintry feel to the day. Chilled temperatures in the 40s are expected, with some areas possibly not exceeding 45 degrees, alongside periods of rain and possibly even some thunder.

Post-Monday, quieter weather is in store, with temperatures dropping into the 30s and low 40s on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Highs during the middle of the week are anticipated to reach the 50s, gradually warming back into the 60s by Thursday and Friday.

This week will certainly be a weather rollercoaster for Houston, transitioning from warmer temperatures to a stark chill, reminding residents to stay prepared and adaptable amid these fluctuations.
