Hornets Ready to Buzz Back Against No. 7 Washington and Lee!

The University of Lynchburg women’s basketball team is preparing to welcome Washington and Lee for their first conference match of the season on Saturday, November 23, at 1 p.m. in Turner Gym. The Hornets, currently holding a record of 1-3, recently celebrated their inaugural victory of the season with an impressive 70-38 win against Wilson. In that game, Lynchburg consistently dominated the scoreboards across three quarters, racking up 18 points each time while limiting the Phoenix to just 22 points throughout the entire contest. A standout performance came from a freshman guard, who led the team with 16 points alongside three rebounds and two steals. Additionally, a junior forward made significant contributions with a team-high nine rebounds and rounded out her performance with 12 points, five assists, two blocks, and two steals.

On the other hand, No. 7 Washington and Lee enters the game on a high note, riding a three-game winning streak, having recently triumphed over Emory and Oglethorpe in the Emory Tip-Off. Leading the Generals is Mary Schleusner, who’s having a stellar season averaging 27.0 points and 14.7 rebounds per game. Her exceptional performance during the Emory Tip-Off earned her the USBWA DIII National Player of the Week honor and a spot on the D3hoops.com Team of the Week.

Historically, Lynchburg has a slight edge over Washington and Lee, holding a 27-24 advantage in their series since 1995, although the Generals have won the last four matchups, including a 75-62 victory on January 31, 2024.

This season, senior guard has emerged as a key player for the Hornets, recording a double-double against William Peace with 18 points and 12 rebounds and achieving a season-high of 20 points against Marymount, averaging 11.8 points per game.
