Residents of the Waica, Waitete, and Naniu communities in Vanua Levu are celebrating a remarkable enhancement to their water supply, courtesy of a generous donation from the Health Ministry. As part of its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Program, the Ministry has provided three water tanks to these communities, marking a significant step towards improved living conditions.

Polonia Raiova, a local villager, expressed her heartfelt gratitude, describing the installation of the tanks as a symbol of hope for a better future. She shared the struggles her family previously faced, often having to wash clothes and dishes at relatives’ homes on a neighboring island due to an unreliable water supply. The community had been sourcing water from a Catholic Church property in Tutu, but disruptions due to broken pipes were commonplace.

Raiova expressed her appreciation, representing the sentiments of the entire community, especially the women, in thanking the Ministry for this essential support. The newly installed tanks will provide a crucial resource for storing water during droughts or service interruptions, significantly alleviating the burden on residents.

Community elder Atonio Radrodro reflected on the historical challenges of accessing fresh water, recalling how prior generations relied on springs near the seashore, which were only available during low tide. He passionately affirmed the remarkable impact of this donation on families within the communities.

Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, oversaw the donation and took the opportunity to encourage the residents to maintain the tanks and use them wisely. This initiative not only addresses the pressing water supply issues the communities face but also fosters a spirit of community and shared responsibility among the residents, offering hope for a more resilient future.
